New Singular Buzzard All-Mountain prototype - first pics

This is something I've been mulling over for a while. The Swift is a lovely bike for all-round riding whether the trail points up or down, however there seems to be a desire (from myself included) for something a little more oriented to the 'down'. So I've had some prototypes done for the Buzzard. Significantly larger tubing diameters than the Swift (though quite thin walled and still triple butted to keep a lid on the weight), very short (420mm centre to centre) chainstays, slacker head angle (69deg with a sagged 120mm fork, will take up to 140mm fork) and a 44mm ID headtube for use with a zerostack 1 1/8", angleset 1 1/8", or tapered steerer fork. This one has an ebb, I'm undecided whether to keep it for production or just go with a standard 73mm shell which would also help improve tyre clearance (one thing this proto lacks a little). We'll be riding these over the next couple of months to make some final tweaks with the aim of having production frames ready for early summer 2012.

Apologies for the slightly tatty and esoteric parts selection - this is one which was built up from available bits in the shed. There will be a nice one coming!

I really like this prototype! A lot! Now please keep the clean lines and the cable routing, make the head tube angle 1° more relaxed, skip the EBB and add an ISCG-Tab (there is no way you can run a 1x9/10 setup flawlessly in rough terrain without a chain guide)! And please make sure there's enough space for a true 2,4" rubber in the back. I will buy it then for sure!

The HA relaxes a degree with a 140mm fork, and the geometry chart shows a 120mm fork with 20mm of sag. Additionally you could also use an angleset to fine tune head angle thanks to the 44mm ID headtube.

I'm leaning towards 73mm standard shell with ISCG tabs, the goal will definitely be to fit the 2.4" Ardent in the back.

May I be the first to order one in Australia to keep my Swift company. Does a 73 EBB exist???

Sam, as I said...

it's so great; but let me tell you some experience from my side…
EBB - Yes, it's a must or/and think about BB30 as a compromise, there is a EBB around for this standard http://beercomponents.com/?page_id=24

"My XL Buzzard, please :-)" Seattube length from XL Gryphon +1-2 cm, horizontal TT 620cm, Headtube length 130mm, because then it will fits an Lefty Max with IS 44mm Headset) and all the other tapered fork stuff for sure!

Cheers Xiron

xiron - no chance it's going to be BB30. Why not just use one of the eccentric bb's which fits a standard shell if it's that important not to have a tensioner? Phil Wood, Forward Components and Trickstuff make them. Pretty much decided it will be 73mm shell with ISCG tabs. JMPG, we could make a 73mm wide EBB, which would help tyre clearance a little, but not as much as going to a standard diameter shell.

I like the ability to run an IGH an EBB is a good start, there are plent of options and I'd still like to be the first to order a Buzzard in Australia.

I like EBB's, as you can tell from the rest of the range, both for SS-ability and IGH-ability. However, one of the key goals with this project was to try to get the stays as short as possible - going to a plain BB shell will give us both clearance for very large tyres and still keep the chainstays very short. IGH or SS would still be possible via a derailleur hanger mounted tensioner, or one which mounts on the ISG tabs like the Blackspire Stinger http://www.blackspire.com/qs/product/83/5947/263221/0/0. If you really want maximum neatness then the Phil Wood external ebb's as above work very well.

OK Sam, no BB30, I like 73mm BB and an EBB for tension the chain going singlespeed or geard hubs. With trickstuff etc. you may need a half link on the chain and I don't like these special tools.
IGH, ISG, ISCG... ??? don't need it for my setup, SSP, gearhub, 1x9...
But what about other frame sizes,? A XL, please!!! I'm 1.94m tall, so need a 21" or 52cm frame.
